Enlist E3™ Soybeans
Written for Sevita by Dave Kloppenburg, Corteva Canada's Soybean Herbicides Expert
The introduction of Enlist E3™ soybeans to the market in 2019 could not have arrived at a better time for Canadian growers struggling to stay ahead of resistant weeds like common ragweed, giant ragweed, Canada fleabane, and waterhemp. While there are other herbicide trait systems available for soybeans, the Enlist™ Weed Control System offers some unique advantages to growers. Enlist E3 soybeans combine genetics with Enlist™ herbicides that are designed for low physical drift and near-zero volatility and odour, which together provide growers with simply better soybeans.
New for 2021 is Enlist™ 1 herbicide, a standalone 2,4-D choline formulation with Colex-DTM technology. Now Enlist E3 growers can choose the convenience of Enlist Duo™ which is pre-formulated with glyphosate or the flexibility of Enlist 1 which allows growers to choose their own glyphosate. Enlist 1 also allows for tank-mixing with Liberty® 200 SN which enables the use of a Group 10 herbicide. E3 soybeans enable herbicide groups 4, 9, and 10 – that’s why they are called E3. But that’s not all…Stewardship and sustainability are an important part of the Enlist system, including what is called the Program Approach – making sure that many tools including, the use of residual herbicides with other modes of action (such as groups 2,3,5,14 and 15) are incorporated into the system. The use of proper stewardship will ensure that the Enlist cropping system is sustainable for years to come.
E3 soybeans are also a great fit for the “hard-to-control” species including many of the perennial broadleaves like thistles, milkweed, and vetch. For growers battling field horsetail on their farms, E3 soybeans will be a game-changer giving growers a chance to finally manage this “pre-historic” weed.

Both Enlist herbicides contain Colex-D technology. This technology built on the new choline salt of 2,4-D delivers near-zero volatility, minimized physical drift, low odour, and improved handling. This means you can spray in the heat of the day without fear of off-target movement, even when spraying near sensitive crops. This will provide confidence to growers who need to spray in the post-emergence window. Both Enlist Duo and Enlist 1 are registered for applications up to the R2 stage. For Liberty 200 SN applications, you can spray as late as R1. For resistant and hard-to-control species, spray Enlist Duo at 1.74 L/ac or Enlist 1 at 0.73 L/ac. Enlist 1 should always be tank-mixed with either glyphosate or Liberty 200 SN. For the glyphosate tank-mix, consider higher rates up to 2 REL per acre. For the Enlist 1 + Liberty 200 SN tank-mix, the 1 L/ac rate of Liberty is recommended.
An added bonus for growers using the Enlist herbicides: You can use nozzles that deliver coarse to extremely coarse droplets - some of the same nozzles used for fungicides and conventional herbicides - this helps to ensure better spray coverage. The recommended volume is 10-15 GPA. Even with all these benefits, we still urge growers to use common sense and make sure to avoid spraying when the wind is above 16 km/hr, or blowing towards a sensitive crop.
